In the animal world there are many entertaining and evocative collective nouns, for example: an army of frogs, a charm of finches, an unkindness of ravens, a business of ferrets, a kettle of hawks, etc. One of my favorites is, a murder of crows.
Of course pencils don’t apply here, but crows have wings that are black. Maybe the usage could be borrowed:
“By the piano were the composer’s only tools: a fresh pot of coffee, and a murder of Blackwings.”

Update 4/27/12:
You can see this photo in a New Yorker article by Mary Norris about the Blackwing, though this blog isn’t cited. This picture is used for the Wikipedia article on the Blackwing, which has the text “blackwingpages” on it, but the blog name was removed and the photo darkened before the New Yorker published it. They credited Wikimedia Commons rather than this site, which is listed as the author of the photo.
